In reality, they refer to different types of facilities, each with its own range of services, environment, use of water and overall wellness purpose.

The distinction becomes even less clear when the same facility offers a sauna, steam bath, hammam, swimming pool, hot tub, sensory showers, relaxation areas and body treatments. Where does a wellness center end and a spa begin? And, above all, what is the difference between a spa and a thermal spa?

Understanding these distinctions is not only useful for those looking to enjoy a few hours of relaxation. It is also essential for hotels, resorts, beauty centers, hospitality businesses and private clients considering the design of a spa or wellness center.

In this guide, we clarify the key differences and explore the spaces and facilities that can make up a modern wellness experience.

Spa, Wellness Center and Thermal Spa: Key Differences at a Glance

Before taking a closer look, here is a quick comparison.

Structure

Main Feature

Possible Facilities and Services

SPA

Wellness experience based on the combination of water, heat, steam and relaxation.

Sauna, steam bath, hammam, hot tub, sensory showers, swimming pool, Kneipp path, relaxation area.

Wellness Center

A broader concept focused on physical and mental well-being and personal care.

Spa, massages, beauty treatments, relaxation area, sauna, steam bath.

Thermal Spa

Use of thermal waters within a thermal spa facility.

Thermal pools, baths, mud treatments and authorized thermal therapies.

The most important distinction concerns thermal spas: simply having a heated swimming pool or a hot tub is not enough for a facility to be considered a thermal spa.

A modern spa area, on the other hand, can be created in a hotel, resort, gym, beauty center or private home, without necessarily having access to a thermal water source.

What Is a Spa?

A spa is a space designed to provide a relaxing and rejuvenating experience through water, heat, steam, sensory experiences and dedicated relaxation areas.

Today, the term is therefore used to describe a wide variety of wellness facilities.

A spa can be:

a spa in a hotel or resort;

a day spa;

a private spa;

a home spa;

a spa within a wellness center;

a wellness area in a gym or sports center;

a wellness space integrated into a beauty center.

There is therefore no single standard configuration.

A small private spa may include a sauna, steam bath and sensory shower, while a larger wellness center may also feature a swimming pool, hot tub, Kneipp path, hammam, cold area and relaxation zone.

What Facilities Can Be Found in a Spa?

The quality of a spa does not depend on the number of facilities or features it offers, but on its ability to create a well-designed and cohesive wellness experience.

Temperature, humidity, water, lighting, materials, fragrances and relaxation areas should all work together harmoniously.

Let’s take a look at the most common areas.

Finnish Sauna

The Finnish sauna primarily uses dry heat and high temperatures, combined with relatively low humidity levels.

Traditionally, the interiors are made of wood, a material that contributes both to insulation and to the distinctive atmosphere of the sauna cabin.

During the design phase, it is possible to customize:

wood species and finishes;

bench layout;

lighting;

cabin dimensions;

heater and control system;

glass walls;

architectural details.

Alongside the Finnish sauna, other solutions can be included, featuring more moderate temperatures and different humidity levels, such as the bio sauna.

Turkish Bath or Steam Bath

<div class="wp-block-media-text class="wp-block-media-text__content">

The Turkish bath, also known as a steam bath, creates a completely different environment from a sauna.

The temperature is lower, while the humidity level is very high.

Walls, flooring, ceiling and seating must be specifically designed to withstand continuous exposure to heat and steam. For this reason, waterproofing, insulation, ventilation, the steam generator, drainage systems and the choice of finishes are particularly important.

Ceramic tiles, porcelain stoneware, mosaics, resins and technical surfaces make it possible to create fully customized environments.

Chromotherapy, aromatherapy, atmospheric lighting and internal showers can also be integrated to enhance the overall experience.

Hammam

The principle of moist heat is similar, but a true hammam involves a more elaborate ritual and a more complex organization of spaces.

It can include heated surfaces, seating, fountains, areas dedicated to body rituals, and a central feature made of marble or technical material.

For this reason, in contemporary spa design, the hammam is often conceived as a complete wellness experience, in which architecture, materials and rituals play a role just as important as steam generation.

emotional showers

<div class="wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile class="wp-block-media-text__content">

Sensory showers transform a simple shower into a multisensory experience.

Water jets and mists can be combined with:

temperature variations;

chromotherapy;

aromas;

lighting effects;

programmed sequences.

They are particularly effective as a transition between heated areas and spaces dedicated to cooling down.

A tropical rain shower, for example, can provide warmer water combined with lighting and fragrances, while a cold mist can create a completely different sensation after spending time in a sauna or steam bath.

Kneipp Path

The Kneipp path uses alternating water temperatures.

In the most common configurations, users walk through two pools or sections filled with hot and cold water, often featuring a pebble-covered floor.

Within a spa experience, it primarily serves as an interesting element of thermal and sensory contrast.

Hot Tub and Wellness Pool

Water and movement also take center stage in hot tubs and wellness pools.

Jets, nozzles, submerged seating, waterfalls and other features can transform a swimming pool into an immersive wellness environment rather than simply a place for swimming.

However, the design must carefully consider dimensions, water treatment, circulation, filtration, maintenance, and integration with the rest of the wellness area.

Relaxation Area

A well-designed spa should not end with the sauna or steam bath.

Relaxation after spending time in heated areas is an integral part of the wellness experience.

Loungers, chaise longues, indirect lighting, quiet surroundings, acoustic comfort and natural materials help create a space to unwind between one stage of the wellness experience and the next.

It is precisely the alternation between activity and rest that makes the wellness experience more harmonious.

What Is a Wellness Center?

A wellness center is a broader concept.

It may include a spa, but it can also offer services that are not directly related to water, steam or heat.

Depending on the facility, it may include:

massages;

beauty treatments;

body rituals;

facial treatments;

relaxation area;

sauna;

steam bath;

hammam;

hot tub;

sensory showers;

wellness experiences.

We can therefore consider the wellness center as the broader framework for wellness services, while the spa can represent one of its most important components.

What Is the Difference Between a Spa and a Wellness Center?

The distinction is not always clear-cut because, in commercial language, the two terms are often used interchangeably.

A practical definition, however, can help:

A spa primarily refers to wellness environments and experiences based on the combination of water, heat, steam, thermal contrast and relaxation; a wellness center can complement these areas with manual treatments, beauty treatments and other personal care services.

Consequently, a wellness center can include a fully equipped spa.

At the same time, a facility can offer a small spa area without providing massages or beauty treatments.

What Is a Thermal Spa?

A thermal spa, or more precisely a thermal establishment, belongs to a different category.

In Italy, the use of terms such as “thermal baths,” “thermal,” “thermal water,” “thermal mud,” and other related expressions is regulated by legislation governing the thermal spa sector.

The key factor is the use of natural mineral waters for therapeutic purposes within the framework established by law, together with the required authorizations for the facility.

This means that a standard spa does not become a thermal spa simply because it has hot water, a swimming pool, a sauna or a hot tub.

Are Spas and Thermal Spas the Same Thing?

No.

A spa can use regular water that has been properly treated and heated for swimming pools, hot tubs, showers and wellness experiences.

A thermal spa facility, on the other hand, is specifically associated with the use of thermal waters and is subject to the regulations governing the thermal spa sector.

A thermal spa facility may, however, also include a modern spa area with a sauna, steam bath, hammam, sensory showers and relaxation areas.

The two concepts can therefore coexist within the same facility, but they are not the same.

Spa or Wellness Center: Which Solution Is Best for a Hospitality Facility?

For hotels, resorts, agritourism properties and other hospitality facilities, the most useful question is not simply “spa or wellness center?”, but rather:

What kind of experience do we want to offer our guests?

A hotel looking to create a compact wellness area could focus on:

sauna + steam bath + sensory shower + relaxation area.

A larger facility could also include:

wellness pool + hot tub + Kneipp path + hammam + cold area + treatment rooms for massages and beauty treatments.

There is no single configuration that is universally better.

The solution should be developed based on:

available space;

expected number of users;

type of facility;

target clientele;

available budget;

day-to-day management;

energy and water consumption;

maintenance requirements;

existing systems and infrastructure;

hotel positioning;

the type of experience you want to create.

How Do You Design a Spa or Wellness Center?

Creating a wellness center is not simply a matter of placing a series of features and equipment inside a room.

Good design starts with the user journey.

Space Analysis

Before choosing a sauna, steam bath or swimming pool, it is essential to assess the available space, ceiling heights, access points, technical rooms, drainage systems, ventilation and the building’s structural characteristics.

An on-site inspection helps determine which solutions can realistically be installed.

Defining the Wellness Journey

The different areas should follow a logical sequence.

One possible configuration could include:

entrance → preparation → heated area → cooling down → second treatment → relaxation.

The goal is to avoid random movement between areas and create an intuitive, seamless experience.

3. Choosing the Wellness Areas

Sauna, bio sauna, steam bath, hammam, sensory shower, swimming pool, hot tub and Kneipp path do not all necessarily need to be included.

Each element should serve a specific purpose within the overall wellness experience.

Systems Design

The less visible aspects are often the most important.

Electrical power requirements, water supply and drainage, ventilation, air treatment, waterproofing, insulation and technical rooms all have a direct impact on the reliability of the facility.

It is therefore advisable to address these aspects from the earliest stages of the project.

5. Materials and Design

A modern wellness center should be technically efficient while also having a distinctive identity.

Wood, glass, mosaic, stone, porcelain stoneware, solid surfaces and lighting can create very different identities: from a minimalist spa to a nature-inspired wellness area, or even a highly atmospheric hammam.

Customization also makes it possible to integrate the wellness center seamlessly with the architectural style of the hotel or private residence.

6. Technology and Management

A professional spa should also be designed with long-term operation and management in mind.

Technical accessibility, ease of cleaning, maintenance, control systems, spare parts availability and equipment reliability all contribute to the long-term sustainability of the investment.

Can You Create a Private Spa or Wellness Center at Home?

Yes. The same principles used in professional wellness centers can also be adapted to a home spa.

Large spaces are not necessarily required.

With the right technical conditions, it is possible to create, for example:

custom-made sauna;

steam bath;

small hammam area;

sensory shower;

hot tub;

relaxation area.

The real difference lies in the design.

In a limited space, it is often better to choose two or three well-integrated wellness experiences rather than overcrowding the area with numerous poorly functional features.

What Are the Most Important Elements of a Modern Wellness Area?

A contemporary spa is increasingly focused on providing a multisensory and personalized experience.

Water and temperature remain central to the experience, but they are complemented by other elements.

Lighting

Lighting has a profound influence on how a space is perceived.

Indirect lighting, integrated LEDs and programmed lighting scenarios can be used to change the atmosphere throughout the wellness experience.

Aromatherapy

Fragrances and essences can be diffused in the steam bath, where the system allows, or integrated into specific sensory shower programs.

The aim is to add an olfactory dimension to the experience.

Sound

Music and soundscapes can accompany the wellness experience without becoming intrusive, especially in relaxation areas.

Materials

The tactile qualities of wood, stone, ceramic, mosaic, and natural or textured surfaces help create a greater sense of comfort.

Customization

A custom-designed spa allows dimensions, finishes and technology to be coordinated with the identity of the facility.

For a hotel, this means turning the wellness center into a true extension of the brand.

Designing a spa means creating an experience, not simply installing products.

Understanding the difference between a spa, a wellness center and a thermal spa is the first step.

The second is understanding that an effective wellness area is created through the right balance of architecture, technology and the user journey.

An excellent sauna placed in the wrong location does not automatically create a well-designed spa. The same applies to a steam bath, swimming pool or sensory shower.

To achieve a harmonious result, the entire project must be considered: space planning, technical systems, materials, temperatures, humidity, lighting, fragrances, cooling areas and relaxation spaces.

Tecnowell designs and builds wellness centers and spas for hotels, hospitality facilities, sports centers, beauty centers and private clients, managing every stage of the project from the initial site inspection and design to production and installation.

Custom saunas, steam baths and hammams, sensory showers, swimming pools and other wellness solutions can thus become part of a single, integrated experience, designed around the characteristics of the space and the goals of the facility.

Conclusion

Spa, wellness center and thermal spa represent three different approaches to well-being.

A spa revolves around the wellness experience and can integrate saunas, steam, water features, hot tubs, sensory showers and relaxation areas.

A wellness center has a broader scope and can combine spa facilities with massages, beauty treatments and other personal care services.

A thermal spa, on the other hand, belongs to a specific and regulated sector, linked to the use of thermal waters and the activities carried out by authorized thermal establishments.

For anyone looking to create a new wellness area, understanding these differences helps guide a more important decision: designing the spaces around the experience you want to offer.

And it is precisely through a coherent approach that brings together spaces, technology and design that a truly distinctive spa takes shape.

FAQs About Spas, Wellness Centers and Thermal Spas

Is a Swimming Pool Necessary to Create a Spa?

No. A spa can also be designed without a swimming pool. A sauna, steam bath, sensory shower and relaxation area can already create a complete wellness experience. The final configuration depends on the available space, expected number of users, type of facility and the experience you want to offer.

How Much Space Is Needed to Create a Spa in a Hotel?

There is no minimum floor area that applies to every project. A small wellness area can focus on just a few key spaces, while facilities with a higher guest capacity require larger areas. The planning process should also take into account changing rooms, circulation spaces, technical systems, plant rooms and relaxation areas.

What Is the Difference Between a Hammam and a Turkish Bath?

Both use moist heat and steam, but a hammam traditionally refers to a more elaborate experience involving specific spaces and rituals. A modern Turkish bath, on the other hand, can be designed as a single steam room, potentially enhanced with chromotherapy, aromatherapy and atmospheric lighting.

Can a Spa Be Installed in an Existing Building?

Yes, but the compatibility of the available spaces and technical systems should be assessed in advance. Drainage, waterproofing, ventilation, electrical power, water supply and technical rooms can all affect the solutions that can be implemented. For this reason, a technical site inspection is particularly useful in renovation projects.

Sauna or Steam Bath: Which Is Better for a Small Wellness Area?

It depends on the target audience, the available space and the technical characteristics of the building. A sauna primarily uses dry heat, while a steam bath relies on steam and very high humidity levels. When space allows, combining the two makes it possible to offer two distinctly different thermal experiences.

Spa, wellness center and thermal spa are often used interchangeably.
